about this project

Located along Tanjong Katong Road, King’s Mansion is a 35 years old condominium with a unique sunken living room rarely seen in other apartments.

“How do we maximise daylight into this old apartment?” was the key design question we asked ourselves at the start of the project, in view of the deep layout that makes the existing apartment dark and uncomfortable. The design approach was to use simple volumetric forms to conceal all the required storage from sight, allowing daylight to wash the various light coloured surfaces in a big space.

As different light source washes the apartment, slight contrasting texture from different wall finishes such as cement screed and subway tiles reflect the light differently. Even the breakfast table is simplified to a large cantilevered slab without any conventional table structure.
