Located along Tanjong Katong Road, King’s Mansion is a 35 years old condominium with a unique sunken living room rarely seen in other apartments.

“How do we maximise daylight into this old apartment?”

In view of the existing deep floor plan layout that makes the existing apartment dark and uncomfortable. The design approach was to use simple volumetric forms to conceal all the required storage from sight, using light coloured materials to allow maximum daylight to enter the big living space.

Using slight contrasting texture such as cement screed and subway tiles, the daylight reflection on the various materials differ accordingly, adding subtle space of interest within the apartment. Even the breakfast table is simplified to a large cantilevered slab without any conventional table structure to avoid unnecessary blockage of the daylight.
