Like the XXRAY toys, a neatly split half of the workspace is designed to reveal the glorious insides: structure, mechanical and electrical services, roof trusses, and pipes. Even the raised floor system is revealed through the unusual use of clear acrylic as a floor material.
We completed the new office of Singaporean toy designers Mighty Jaxx by referencing the duality and transparency of their famed XXRAY Universe collection.
Mighty Jaxx is Singaporean design studio specializing in developing collectible toys. To cater to their expanding team, they wanted a new office space that would support collaboration and encourage creativity. The brief also asked for a showcase area to impress visitors and investors.
The most notable collection of Mighty Jaxx is the XXRAY Universe collection. Characters in the XXRAY Universe are designed with the figures sliced in half: one side being opaque, the other being transparent with the insides exposed in full glory. We took this duality and transparency as an inspiration for the design of their new office space located in Tai Seng, an industrial estate in Singapore. The office spaces are imagined as part of the XXRAY series housing the universe of toys.
Like the XXRAY toys, a neatly split half of the workspace is designed to reveal the glorious insides: structure, mechanical and electrical services, roof trusses, and pipes. Even the raised floor system is revealed through the unusual use of clear acrylic as a floor material. The messiness is reigned in by applying a uniform palette of the corporate colours black and yellow. This section of “exposed innards” houses the creatives, a befitting metaphor for the brains behind the studio.
The other half of the workspace, housing the business side of the studio, is finished in a pristine white palette. This was also in response to the intention to retain some of the existing office furniture from the landlord, for both budget and environmental reasons.
